The Tiny Rectangle Blue Vase with Etched ʻŌhiʻa is a petite yet striking piece of glass art by Big Island artist Heather Mettler. Its sleek rectangular shape and radiant blue hue provide the perfect backdrop for the delicately sand-etched ʻŌhiʻa blossom—a flower that symbolizes strength, resilience, and aloha. Compact and refined, this vase is ideal for showcasing a single stem or adding a touch of Hawaiian artistry to any small space.
Heather Mettler grew up on the Kona coast of Hawai‘i, where the lush forests, volcanic landscapes, and surrounding Pacific Ocean continue to inspire her work. She began her artistic journey apprenticing in sandblasting, honed her craft at the Pilchuck Glass School, and later earned a BFA in Glass from the University of Hawai‘i.
For more than 20 years, Heather has explored the expressive potential of glass, often describing it as a medium that, like water, is fluid, versatile, and luminous when touched by light. Her pieces reflect the natural rhythms of Hawai‘i, blending contemporary form with cultural and ecological motifs.
Though small in size, this vase carries deep meaning. The etched ʻŌhiʻa design pays tribute to one of Hawai‘i’s most iconic native blossoms, often associated with love, resilience, and renewal. With its shimmering blue body and crisp geometric form, this vase balances modern elegance with the timeless beauty of island flora.
