The Tall Amber Pebble Vase with Etched Coral is a luminous example of Hawaiian glass artistry by Heather Mettler. Its warm amber tones, organic pebble-textured form, and intricate coral etching capture the radiance of the Pacific and the beauty of Hawai‘i’s reefs. With its tall, elegant silhouette, this piece makes a bold statement as a centerpiece while honoring the marine life that inspires it.
Heather Mettler grew up on the Kona coast of Hawai‘i, where the island’s lava landscapes, lush rainforests, and ever-changing ocean continue to shape her work. Her journey with glass began as a teen apprentice in sandblasting, later refined through studies at the Pilchuck Glass School and a BFA in Glass from the University of Hawai‘i.
Over more than 20 years, Heather has developed a distinctive style that blends the strength and fluidity of glass with inspiration drawn from Hawai‘i’s flora and marine life. For her, glass is alive, much like water—textural, versatile, and radiant when touched by light.
The glowing amber pebble surface reflects the warmth of volcanic stone, while the etched coral design evokes the delicacy and resilience of Hawai‘i’s reef ecosystems. When illuminated by natural or ambient light, the vase shifts in tone and depth, echoing the play of sunlight under the sea. Elegant, organic, and deeply rooted in place, it’s a piece that embodies both art and nature.
