The Small Turquoise/Copper Cylinder Vase with Etched ʻŌhiʻa is a handcrafted glass piece by Big Island artist Heather Mettler, blending rich tones of turquoise and copper with the delicate beauty of Hawai‘i’s beloved native ʻŌhiʻa blossom. With its sleek cylindrical form and luminous finish, this vase captures both modern elegance and deep cultural symbolism. Perfect as a bud vase or displayed as a standalone accent, it brings island artistry to any space.
Heather Mettler grew up on the Kona coast of Hawai‘i, where the lush forests, volcanic landscapes, and ever-changing ocean inspired her lifelong connection to the natural world. She began her journey apprenticing with a sandblasting artist as a teenager, later expanding her craft at the Pilchuck Glass School before earning a BFA in Glass from the University of Hawai‘i.
For more than 20 years, Heather has worked in glass, exploring its fluid, textural, and light-filled possibilities. To her, glass mirrors the movement of water—versatile, luminous, and ever-changing—and her pieces often feature motifs from Hawai‘i’s native flora and marine life.
The combination of turquoise and copper tones reflects both ocean depths and volcanic warmth, while the etched ʻŌhiʻa motif honors a flower that symbolizes strength, resilience, and aloha. Compact and refined, this vase glows when illuminated, embodying both the vitality of Hawai‘i’s natural world and the timeless beauty of handblown glass.
