“Paradise” by Hawai‘i-based artist Kris Goto is more than a depiction of the bird of paradise flower—it’s a meditation on communication, timing, and connection. Inspired by the blossoms in her own backyard, Goto weaves in the playful imagery of ito-denwa (a childhood toy of yarn and paper cups) to explore how messages travel—and sometimes get lost—between sender and recipient.
Much like fruit ripens in its own season, so do conversations, growth, and relationships. With delicate linework and bold storytelling, this piece reflects on how meaning can be missed when the moment isn’t right—and how important it is to recognize alignment when it arrives.
