The Flat Grey Vase with Etched Honu is a handcrafted glass artwork by Big Island artist Heather Mettler, blending sleek modern form with deep cultural meaning. Its cool grey surface and wide, flattened silhouette provide the perfect canvas for the etched honu (Hawaiian sea turtle), a symbol of wisdom, endurance, and good luck. Contemporary yet timeless, this vase makes a striking centerpiece or collectible accent.
Heather Mettler grew up on the Kona coast of Hawai‘i, surrounded by volcanic landscapes, forests, and the ever-changing ocean—all of which inspire her work. She began her artistic path apprenticing in sandblasting, later refining her craft at the Pilchuck Glass School, and completing her BFA in Glass from the University of Hawai‘i.
For over 20 years, Heather has transformed glass into luminous works that mirror the qualities of water—fluid, versatile, and radiant with light. Her designs frequently highlight Hawaiian flora and marine life, celebrating the islands’ beauty through contemporary glass artistry.
With its flat profile and sophisticated grey tones, this vase has a modern, understated elegance. The etched honu design brings movement and meaning to the piece, paying tribute to the sea turtle’s role in Hawaiian culture as a guardian of the sea and a symbol of longevity. When touched by light, the etched details and glass surface come alive, making it both a sculptural work and a vessel infused with spirit.
