Born and raised in Honolulu, Hawai‘i, Clyde Oishi blends technical expertise with artistic innovation to create striking wire sculptures that are both structurally intricate and visually compelling. The son of a television technician, Clyde began his career in the electronics industry before pursuing his passion for art at the University of Hawai‘i, where he earned a BA in Studio Art.
Drawing on both his industrial background and formal training, Clyde developed a distinctive sculptural technique that involves soldering wire into a grid-like framework and gradually building it into a dense, dimensional form. This innovative method—now referred to as the “Oishi Technique,” a name coined by his first student, David Messing—has become his artistic signature.
His work ranges from abstract compositions to more representational pieces, and has been featured in numerous juried exhibitions and received multiple awards. Oishi’s sculptures are held in both corporate and private collections around the world. Today, in addition to creating new work, Clyde teaches his technique to emerging artists, drawing fresh inspiration from the creativity of his students.
