Artist Spotlight: Pegge Hopper — A Legacy of Grace and Color
Pegge Hopper artwork featured in Magnolia Hawaii's window display.
At Magnolia Hawaii, there are certain works of art that seem to stop time. The kind that draw people in from the hallway, press them closer to the window, and speak to something deep inside. For many years, that moment of pause has often come courtesy of the serene, graceful women painted by Pegge Hopper.
We’re proud to have carried Pegge Hopper’s prints and originals for years — and even more honored to share in the legacy she’s created here in Hawaii.
About Pegge Hopper
Born in Oakland, California, Pegge studied painting at the Los Angeles Art Center College of Design. Her early creative journey included:
-
Working in New York for Raymond Loewy Associates
-
Living in Milan, Italy (1961–1963) and illustrating for laRinascente
-
Moving to Honolulu in 1963, where she worked as an art director
It was here in Hawaii, after a visit to the State Archives, that Pegge rediscovered her passion for painting. Inspired by archival photographs of Native Hawaiians, she began to develop a signature style that would become deeply rooted in the visual landscape of Hawaii.
A Style All Her Own
Pegge Hopper’s paintings are known for their:
-
Vivid color fields
-
Contemplative female subjects
-
Bold yet serene compositions
The women she paints are often depicted in quiet moments — lounging, reflecting, or simply existing with strength and grace. Her use of color and space feels at once modern and timeless, grounded in Hawaiian identity and beauty.
A Honolulu Icon
In 1983, Pegge opened her own gallery in Honolulu’s Historic Chinatown, where she welcomed art lovers for decades. Though her gallery closed a few years ago, her work remains widely celebrated — and deeply cherished by collectors across Hawaii and beyond.
