Elizabeth Kent's love for arts and crafts began in her early teens, when she strung and sold puka shell necklaces. Now a Kailua resident, Elizabeth is a textile artist who uses vintage kimono and obi to create unique and stylish jackets, vests, shawls, scarves, table runners and more. Elizabeth has deep love for Hawaii and the Asian influence that is a part of Hawaii’s cultural fabric. Her art is her way of merging her interests in recycling and repurposing, textiles and functional art. She derives great pleasure in working with the fine silks that kimono and obi are made from, and melding them into new creations that can be worn to enhance daily life. Some of her jackets and vests follow the flow of the original kimono from which they were made. Some of them have imperfections in the material, as would be expected from something that was made from vintage fabric, and the result of Elizabeth’s effort is authentic beauty. Elizabeth loves to quilt, and her roots and inspiration come from Hawaiian quilting. Elizabeth is also a mediator, meeting facilitator, trainer in conflict resolution, and teaches a graduate course in conflict resolution at the University of Hawaii, Matsunaga Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution. She is a recipient of numerous awards, including the Church of the Crossroads' Dr. Martin Luther King Peacemaker Award.
