Lenei Sousa is the designer behind La’anei. She is a Hawaiian cultural practitioner, educator, and jewelry artist. Her passion is Hawaiian culture and making things. She tries to practice her culture every day by creating adornments as her kūpuna did, and she offers them to kama‘āina at an affordable price. La‘anei, which means "the sacred present time," was born out of the idea that Hawaiians and locals should have equal access to resources and that we must perpetuate our culture and traditions of our ancestors daily. La'anei one-of-a-kind pieces are often created in collaboration with locals to create beautiful pieces that are dreamed up, and are heavily influenced by ocean and land-life. The majority of shells used in her shell pieces come from a very special collection handpicked by a kūpuna from the Wai‘anae coast of O‘ahu many years ago. All moana adornments were handpicked from the beaches, not the oceans, of Hawai‘i nei and were never taken live. The Hawaiian proverb "Kāhiko o na akua" literally translates to "adornment of the gods," and refers to the idea that we come from, and are like, Akua, and should treat ourselves as such everyday.
