Restless at night from the sounds of the pū, Kiha’s guards caught a villager’s dog, Puapualenalena stealing ‘awa from the chief’s patch. A job not fit for a large human, Kiha proposes for Puapua to steal the pū from the Menehune in return for sparing their lives. Puapua made his way up the cliff to where the Menehune lived and just before dawn grabbed the pū accidently chipping it on a rock and quickly made his way down to the village where he was praised. Named after the chief, Kihapu still has a chip missing in it as proof of this legendary story of Waipi‘o.
